Fighting Breast Cancer with Sylene

Did you know that 1 in 8 women living in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime?  Scary statistic, right?  We have made so many strides in the fight against breast cancer but we have not won the battle yet.  There is still a long way to go with fundraising for research and new treatments that we must do before we can cure this deadly disease for good.  The good new is that there are so many ways that each and every one of us can do our part to help.

In our search to help and to get the word out to our readers, we approached our favorite local lingerie and swimwear shop, Sylene, to find out how they do their part to help fund the Breast Cancer battle.  Cyla and Helen, the sisters behind the Chevy Chase based luxury lingerie store, were extremely welcoming when we came in and toured the store. It was just as if we had just entered one of their homes. They take such great pride in their store (which has been in business for an astounding 39 years!), it’s easy to see that every piece of merchandise has been meticulously selected with their customers in mind.

They may carry the most luxurious lingerie and sultry swimwear in the DC area, but their main focus is on the fit.  After many years in business they have discovered that 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong size bra! Crazy right?? Cyla, Helen and their talented staff have been working hard to change this statistic and are beyond helpful finding bras that will fit you both beautifully and correctly.

Sylene caters to women of all shapes and sizes and also to women in every stage of their lives.  They specialize in everything from finding your daughter’s first training bra to fitting her underpinnings for her wedding gown.  They also are work very closely with women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer to help find the bras that suit their needs in each stage of treatment.  Working closely with many of these women made them realize that they wanted to contribute to the fight against this deadly disease.  We asked them to share a little about the charities they are involved with and how we can join them to help get the word out.

There are so many wonderful national breast cancer charities that you can donate to such as Susan G Komen and Breast Cancer Research Foundation, but there are many ways to help on the local level. Sylene introduced us to a local partner organization, called Bra-Ha-Ha that raises funds to support breast health, including free mammograms. During the month of October, Sylene is donating 10% from the sale of their gorgeous Cosabella panties to Bra-Ha-Ha! We’re loading up on these perfect panties!  Not only are they a killer addition to our lingerie drawers, but it feels great to contribute to a charity that helps DC women detect breast cancer at its earliest stages. Shopping for a cause, ladies!

Another of Sylene’s charitable projects is their annual “Bra Trade-In Event” benefitting the women of N Street Village, a community of empowerment and recovery for women. Starting October 6th, Customers will receive generous discounts on new bras when they bring in their gently used bras.  Your gently used bras are then donated to the women of the N Street Village, so hurry in to Sylene the event ends October 19th! What a wonderful opportunity to save as much as 20% on a new bra, get fitted so you’re wearing the perfect bra (and size), AND help empower local women who need our support!

Hooray for companies that give back, especially to as important and meaningful a cause as breast cancer research and supporting breast cancer survivors.
