For the past few years, we’ve been building a home on my husband’s family’s cattle ranch in western South Dakota. It’s a project that’s been years in the making, and this summer we’re finally getting to experience what we dreamed about from the beginning. This isn’t just a vacation home. It’s a place rooted in family history. Casey’s family has ranched this land for generations, and while I didn’t grow up on a ranch, I quickly fell in love with the lifestyle and the traditions that come with it. We wanted our boys to have a place where they could grow up chasing sunsets instead of screens, feeding animals before breakfast, riding in the pickup with their grandparents, and learning where their food comes from. A place where family traditions are still alive and hard work is part of everyday life. Building a home out here has been an adventure all its own.
